Learn What Will Crash A Hard Drive!

Free iPhone application lets you SEE, FEEL and HEAR hard drive destruction.

We are pleased to introduce DriveSaver, the first iPhone application developed by a professional data recovery company — and the first iApp built specifically to simulate working hard drive components. Learn how a hard drive works and what causes a hard disk drive crash! We’ve listed all the menu items below, but will let you find one “Easter Egg” on your own – the type of crash that will destroy hard drives and digital data forever!

How does a hard drive work?

The DriveSaver hard disk drive simulator is a fun, educational and useful tool that allows users to see inside a hard drive.

Consumers and IT professionals can use DriveSaver to learn more about hard disk drive components, data storage technology, best practices for protecting digital data, and data recovery solutions.

DriveSaver Menu:

NOTE: In System Preferences/Sounds, make sure the Vibrate function is turned ON and the Volume is set to a comfortable level.

  • Hard Drive Simulator Menu:
Simulator: Peer into a functioning modern hard disk drive. Hear the drive spin up. See the actuator seek across the media as it reads and writes data.
Demo Mode cycles through all components and several crash modes. Highlights component names and descriptions.
  • Crash a Hard Drive Menu:
Clicker Failure: See how the “click of death”, a major cause of data loss, can destroy a hard drive.
No Spin/Seized Motor: Demonstrates failures from a bad motor and “stiction”.
Spin Up and Down: Witness a drive spinning up and down due to a variety of potential failures.
Electronic Failure: Touch a chip to trigger ESD (electro static discharge). Learn how ESDs can destroy hard disk drives.
Contamination Failure: Comparison chart illustrates particulate sizes relative to hard drive read/write head size. Demonstrates how particulates destroy hard drive data when a drive is opened or the media is touched in any way.
Head Crash Failure: Watch the read/write head mechanism contact the platters (media) and cause physical damage, the most common failure requiring professional data recovery. Touch the platters to see a 50X magnification of a real head crash.
  • Protection Strategies Menu:
Best Practices: Tips to help prevent data loss.
    Backup Strategies: Backup! Backup! Backup!
Data Recovery Service or Software? Best data recovery application options.
Secure Your Data: Read it, learn it, live it!
Enter the Cleanroom: Tap the screen to navigate through a slide show of DriveSavers ISO 5 certified cleanroom. See extreme drive failures and successful data recovery applications. Detailed descriptions on the back of each image.

Drivesaver iPhone Application

DriveSaver — a fun, educational and useful hard disk drive simulator that allows users to see inside a hard drive and learn why drives fail.

“Initially, we developed this application for IT professionals participating in our Partner Program. We knew they would value an internal reference tool that would help them educate their customers about hard drive storage technology and data recovery,” said Scott Gaidano, president of DriveSavers. “It was so well received, we decided to release it to the public for free. Anyone with an iPhone can experience the disastrous feelings, sights and sounds of an actual hard drive crash.”
